Born in Newmarket in Q3-1898, to James and Angelina COCKERTON (née CHIPPERFIELD), of 19 Stanley Road, Newmarket.

1901 census...William [2] was living at Stanley Road, Newmarket with his father James [38] Labourer born Weston Colville; his mother Angelina [36] born Stansfield; his brother Frank[1] and sisters Elizabeth [5] and Jane [4]. All 4 children were born in Newmarket.

1911 census...William [12] was still at 19 Stanley Road with his parents; sister Edith Jane [14]; brothers Frank [11]; Edward Stanley [8] and Joseph Albert [7]. 2 of his siblings had died.


Willie enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
At the time of his death there was no particular battle in progress. The 2nd Warwickshires had just two men (2 Lt Elliott and 1OR ) killed that day. They had relieved the 2nd Queen's in the left sub sector of the Beaumont section (just NE of Beaumont Hamel)

Willie is buried in Frankfurt Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel, France. Ref:D.31
